Launceston Directory
In the North of
Tasmania and at the juncture of three
rivers ( North Esk, South Esk and the Tamar ) lies
beautiful and historic Launceston
Launceston is so easy to reach being only 45
minutes by air from Melbourne and just
95 minutes from
Sydney.
Witha population of 98,000 Launceston is a mix of
charismatic and bustling city life and genuine old world beauty
and charm.
Launceston was first settled in 1806 and was named
after the birthplace of the then NSW Governor ( Governor
Phillip King ) who was born in the Cornish town of Launceston.
Initially the first settlement had been called Patersonia and
while the main title changed the small village of Patersonia
remains just 18 kilometres from the city.
One of the most striking things about the city is the
lack of high rise buildings so prolific on the mainland and in
Hobart. The city is very proud of it's heritage and has worked
overtime to preserve the elegant character and
historic nature of the city.
Holidaying in Launceston is so relaxing you just may
decide to stay for good. If you do and you'd like to
